The most beautiful Swiss Books 2008

Since 1999, the Art and Design section of the OFC (Federal Office for Culture), commissioned by the Federal Department of Home Affairs, organizes each year the competition “Les plus beaux livres suisses” (the most beautiful Swiss books). The interest aroused by the competition has never diminished: this year again, no fewer than 395 works of Swiss book designers, publishers or printers were entered in competition. The jury, composed of five members and presided by Cornel Windlin, has appraised the books and awarded the “most beautiful Swiss books” 2008 prize to 33 titles. The jury assesses the design, graphics and typography of the books, putting the emphasis on innovation and originality. Additionally, the specialists examine the quality of printing and binding, as well as the materials used. The jury includes specialists from various fields of the art of book printing, design, production and publishing.

100 YEARS OF DUTCH GRAPHIC DESIGN
Graphic Design Museum Breda – the Netherlands – 11 June 2008 – 11 June 2011
The exhibition promotes understanding for what graphic design is, how it is made and how it functions. In addition, the presentation clearly shows how graphic design is inextricably linked with the modernisation of society in the twentieth century. By focusing attention on the place that graphic design assumes in daily surroundings and on the practical and symbolic roles that graphic design fulfils, it becomes clear that graphic designs can be assessed on more than just form aspects. This is unlike classic art or museum collections displayed, for example, by period, style or type, which stress the general value of objects and therefore – through lack of context – primarily appreciate the form.

100 Best Posters of 2008 – Austria, Switzerland and Germany
100 posters acclaimed as the best of last year from Austria, Switzerland and Germany will go on display as a continuation of the collaboration with the association 100 Beste Plakate e. V. that began in 2007. As a place which resides over a collection of posters dating from the end of the 19th century onwards, the Art Library is particularly interested in being involved in the newest developments in the area of poster design and helping to present such developments to the general public. The exhibition concept has once again also been drawn up by students from relevant fields of study.
